“Exposed” reveals an artwork’s construction and process as they exist across multiple states at once. The Cardinal goes beyond depiction or symbolism, becoming a vehicle for exposing time, material, and making.
Two stacked canvases are constructed to read as one. The upper canvas is flipped to reveal its backside, while sections from the lower canvas are cut, pulled forward, and folded over the surface.
What appears is not a single image but multiple stages of creation happening simultaneously. The wooden stretcher, simulated paint seeping through raw canvas, and enlargement grids coexist with pencil drawn claws and an open mouthed chick. A completed Cardinal head, cut from the back, overlaps blurred forms seen on raw canvas, allowing different narratives, moments of process and time to occupy the same space.
