Show and Tell brings together childhood, memory, observation, art vocabulary, materials and the lessons associated with them. Fragments of drawings, art lessons, classroom exercises and layers of time come together to create relationships and narratives. The child’s world is remembered and exists alongside the adult artist. A meadow of Purple Loosestrife becomes the setting where these different moments and ways of seeing meet.
Four found crayon toys, altered and reconstructed, are set into openings cut through the canvas. The four crayons take their colors from the painting, with each color identified by its professional artist’s name: Cerulean Blue, Phthalo Green, Dioxazine Purple and Flake White. Each crayon sits against its complementary color, recalling color theory and lessons learned. The openings are part of the painted landscape, some resembling petals or extensions of the vegetation, revealing another physical layer beneath what appears to be a single canvas.
Childlike flowers are drawn and smudged across the painting and its sides, like a chalk drawing from the past, or perhaps a vandalized artwork. What is known can be altered, removed, or remain in traces. What we see is never quite the whole story. Everything exists simultaneously, even if we cannot perceive it.
