This is a self portrait of the artist sitting behind a curtain.. It's painted after the painting by the same name by Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer's painting can be seen hanging on the wall (a decoupage) as well as the painting of Charles Wilson Peale "The Artist in his Museum", both an inspiration for this work.
This is a behind the curtain (literally) look into the process of making art. Where the audience (you the viewer) is looking at a staged demonstration of making art.
Note that the longest side of the painting where the canvas extends beyond the frame the height of the painting is 63 inches.
