Toying with Evolution is a four-panel canvas construction that stages an imagined progression of childhood war toys, moving from raw wooden nutcrackers and the classic toy soldier to contemporary figures such as a Stormtrooper and Captain America. The joined back-to-front canvases allow fronts, reverses, painted figures, and physical objects from different time periods to coexist within the same work. Bare nutcrackers appear as earlier forms in this progression, while later figures acquire new attributes, symbols, and identities that reflect their times. A cartoon-like swirl and animation-inflected color animate the transformation across the surface. On exposed raw canvas, paint appears to seep through from the unseen side facing the wall, suggesting hidden action and the possible presence of an unseen universal player. The work reflects on how toys, images, and cultural meanings evolve, while play, imagination, and the recurring presence of war games persist. Even as times change, nothing has changed in the essence of play and in life. War games always remain.
