Transition is a freestanding, three-dimensional painting that can be installed directly on the floor or displayed on a pedestal. A mannequin and painted canvas move through and around an exposed wooden frame. The figure lifts a corner of the canvas as cloth wraps around its body and leg, appearing simultaneously to enter the painting or materialize from it. Through polychromy, the figure seems to be in the process of being created: much of the body remains in monochrome grays while color gradually emerges, becoming most fully realized in the face. Canvas, mannequin, frame, and brushwork reveal the artwork itself in a state of becoming. This view shows only one angle; moving around the work reveals the back of the nude figure and further transitions between body, canvas, and frame. The work connects artistic creation with transformation, puberty, gender identity, and the continual process of becoming.
